- Recommended Applications
- PEGs are used in a great variety of applications thanks to their chemical structure, their low toxicity, solubility in water and lubricating properties.
- The wide range of PEGs provides flexibility in choosing properties to meet the requirements of many different applications. In the following applications.
- PEGs are used either as intermediates or as auxiliary products.

Chemical Properties
- PEGs are diols meaning they have two reactive terminal –OH groups. The primary hydroxyl functionality allows them to undergo most typical alcohol reactions.
- The most important PEG derivatives are the fatty acid esters used as emulsifiers. dispersants. detergents. plasticizers and lubricants.
- The hydroxyl groups of the PEGs react with aliphatic or aromatic isocyanates to form urethanes (carbamic acid esters). Divalent isocyanates (diisocyanates) and polyhydroxy compounds form high - molecular weight polyurethanes by polyaddition.
- High molecular weight polymers and resins are formed by reaction with a variety of diglycidyl ethers.
Physical Properties
- Polyethylene glycols are relatively nonvolatile and are thermally stable for limited periods of time at temperatures below 300 °C in the absence of oxygen. When exposed to air these polymers are sensitive to oxidative degradation. Addition of a commercial available antioxidant can decrease degradation.
- Physical values are taken from the literature and the company’s own measurements. They do not constitute part of the delivery specification.
- Specifications are available on request from your INEOS sales representative.

Safety & Health
- Health Safety and Environmental Data
- PEGs are products of very low toxicity and do not present hazards to health under normal conditions of industrial use. Special safety measures are not necessary when the products are handled.
- For many applications. particularly in pharmaceuticals. cosmetics and foodstuffs. the toxicological safety of the PEGs is of crucial importance. All PEGs have a very low acute oral toxicity. which is lower than that of glycerol. Chronic studies have confirmed that these products can be considered as practically non - toxic by ingestion. Due to the relatively high molecular weight of PEGs together with the low vapour pressures. hazards from inhalation are unlikely to arise. However at higher temperatures these products may decompose generating vapors which could be irritating.
- PEGs do not cause any appreciable irritation to the eyes. although significant contact with the product may give rise to mild inflammation. PEGs are tolerated well by the human skin and do not cause any sensitisation. They have no macerating action on the areas treated. nor are they absorbed by the skin.
- PEGs can generally be classified as not hazardous to the environment. Although PEGs are readily biodegradable their rate of biodegradation decreases with increasing molar mass
