This product is a fat-soluble, xanthophyll carotenoid, a secondary metabolite naturally synthesized by a number of bacteria, microalgae, and yeasts. Astaxanthin is an organic red-colored carotenoid pigment with the molecular formula C40H52O4. This natural nutritional component can be found in aquatic plants, microalgae, red yeast, and even in the feathers of some birds. The structure of astaxanthin was proved by a group led by Professor Basil Weedon in 1975. Numerous studies have shown astaxanthin may be beneficial for improving Crow's feet wrinkles and elasticity, as well as reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

    Benefit Claims
    Product Features
    • Protection Against Age-Related Challenges
    • Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant, with studies showing it provides significantly greater antioxidant protection than the carotenoids beta carotene, lycopene, and lutein as well as alpha-tocopherol, and thus it is considered one of the best agents for protecting cellular membranes.
    • Its ability to reduce oxidative damage, promote healthy levels of inflammation, and detoxify the body from environmental factors that trigger a pro-inflammatory and oxidative state, has been shown to help reduce changes we often see with aging.
    • Improve the health of the skin
    • Both in vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that astaxanthin may play a promising functional role to treat and prevent skin aging. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in human skin aging and dermal damage. In animal studies, astaxanthin has been shown to reduce UV-induced inflammation and apoptosis, as well as increase the amount of collagen and growth factors, which can enhance wound healing and improve age-related changes.
    • Astaxanthin is reported to improve the DNA repair capacity of cells exposed to UV radiation. In particular, Astaxanthin was capable of minimizing DNA damage and influencing the kinetics of DNA repair. Astaxanthin inhibits the UV-induced DNA damage and increases the expression of oxidative stress-responsive enzymes. Moreover, Astaxanthin was shown to exert its protective effects against cyclophosphamide-induced oxidative stress and DNA damage by activating Nrf2 and modulating NQO1 and HO-1 expressions.
