FR CROS® 484 is a long chain ammonium polyphosphate phase II. This fine white powder is used as a catalyst for solvent- and water-based intumescent coatings, as well for flame retardant coatings for textiles that need good char formation. It has very low solubillity in water and is insoluble in organic solvents.
Above temperatures of 300°C FR CROS® 484 decomposes to polyphosphoric acid and forms a gas layer which minimizes the amount of oxygen available to the substrate. The residual
polyphosphate dehydrates polyols, carbohydrates and other ROH or RNH containing substances. Subsequently, a heat protective barrier (intumescence) is foamed up.

- Recommended Applications
- FR CROS® 484 is used in surface coatings such as intumescent paints, mastics and textile coatings for the passive fire protection of structural steel and wood.
- The insolubility in organic solvents and the low solubility in water allows the formulation of solvent- and water-based coatings.
- Typically 20% - 25% FR CROS® 484, based on total weight of the liquid paint, is used in formulations of intumescent paints.
